"Balze ".
These "Balze" were once the cliffs of a big lake, which have been shaped by erosion into the current very atmospheric "lunar " forms.
Leonardo da Vinci was so fascinated by them that he included them in the backgrounds of some celebrated works for instance in the " Virgin of the rocks".
